This week’s interview & mix comes from Carly Foxx

Introduce yourself and tell us about the part of the UK you’re from?

I’m actually Australian (is that cheating??) but I moved to London 10 years ago, so I’m kind of a little bit British now, right?

Can you tell us a bit about what you’ve been working on recently?

Making tunes. I decided I was going to learn to produce music in November 2014. I didn’t even know how to open logic. Since then I’ve had releases on Danse Club and Stealth Records and a few more in the pipeline for this year.

And can you talk us through the mix?

I spent a lot of time deciding what to play, as I wanted the mix to represent what I’m about as best as possible. I recorded the actual mix in one take on 2 CDJs and a 1210. No frills innit!

There’s a lot of music in there from smaller artists because bigger is not necessarily always better! And I ended the mix with a song I discovered through Daniela La Luz called ‘Bloody Shadows From Afar’, which came out in 1985. I listen to this on repeat most days. I find it so mysterious and captivating.

Nice, talk us through the British music featured in this mix? Which British artists are you most excited about?

I’ve opened with a gorgeous song from Alison Marks, which is pretty special. Also included are two tracks from Gerry Read who I’ve only discovered recently and I was like YES, YES I LOVE THIS. His music is such a fusion of different styles of music; house, hip-hop, ghetto, techno and disco. Lots of mental samples, distorted hats, crunchy kick drums and all that. There are also a few bits from Paranoid London – I love their upfront old skool sound. I’m obsessed with acid.

Cool, tell us about some of your British DJ heroes?

Definitely Paranoid London; raw acid house – yes, thank you. I really love Alison Marks, Leah Floyeurs, Horse Meat Disco, Tim Deluxe, Mr G, Shanti Celeste, Atjazz, DMX Krew… lots of amazing British music!

Great and what’s on the cards in the immediate future?

Trying to find homes for my music and continually producing in the hope that I’ll develop my sound more.

And finally, where is the best place in the world you have performed and why?
So many different vibes at different places! I love playing the Masked Ball in Cornwall, Festival Number 6 was amazing and the tiny sweaty basement club at The Dalston Superstore in London is also great. Oh, and I also DJ annually on a private yacht at the Monaco Grand Prix. I like swanning around that yacht, I like that a lot.
