7 Sides of Frankie Knight [Interview & Mix] | Selector After Dark

This week’s interview & mix comes from Frankie Knight.

Introduce yourself and tell us about the part of the UK you’re from?

Frankie Knight here with Swajne my co-producer. We grew up together in London but now based on the sunny South-coast

Can you tell us a bit about what you’ve been working on recently?

I worked with Swajne on my latest EP, White Lies which came out through XVI Records in August. We are now collaborating closer and working on a follow up EP. He’s also now my drummer for various live shows, which I’m also currently developing visuals for.

Tell us about the mix, how did you put it together, what did you want to represent?

I made this with Swajne. We chose the tracks over a big fried breakfast, sharing the best new music we’ve heard and been inspired by. We wanted all the tracks to be uplifting; from jazz infused soulful hip-hop and low-key love songs to “up on your feet” bouncing beats. There’s a few political undercurrents as I’m often motivated to write by the current need to stand up and promote acceptance and understanding and fight for a better world for all. You’ll find a sample of ANOHNI’s recent performance at The Mercury Music awards, a striking reminder of the power music has to spread a message.

Talk us through the British music featured in this mix? Which British artists excite you?

There’s some of my favourite tracks from other South-Coast artists I’ve shared a stage with and acts I’ve had the pleasure of working alongside with on XVI Records. Couldn’t miss out a couple of peeps that inspired the latest EP: Anchorsong, M.I.A., and Roots Manuva. Ahhh and there’s so much I missed out like Nao, Rosie Lowe, Temples of Youth, Stereo Kela, Munro, Decyfer… give me 2 hours next time! Always excited to hear new material from Yumi!
Nice, and talk us through some of your British DJ Heroes?
Loving Optimo, the Glaswegian DJs. Their remix of Jagwa Ma – OB1 is rather fiery. Esotera puts on a great night and I love the remix he’s made of Beautiful Bodies. And Swajne of course, he’s my hero.

Great and what’s on the cards in the immediate future?

Got a few shows coming up in Brighton, Bristol and Southampton and recording the next EP, which is shaping up to be even more tropical than the last

And finally, where is the best place in the world you have performed and why?

Bognor Regis. That place is so misunderstood.
