7 Sides of Joshua James [Interview & Mix] | Selector After Dark

This weeks interview & mix comes from Joshua James.

Introduce yourself and tell us about the part of the UK you’re from?

Originally from the Southern countryside just left of Southampton, but have been living in London for 11 years.

Tell us about some of your British DJ heroes?

There’s one man in particular, Dan Beaumont, when I first moved to London he was putting on underground queer parties like Trailer Trash which contributed to my musical education. Since then he’s gone on to set up Dalston Superstore and the Dance Tunnel giving the new kids somewhere to get schooled. Total Hero.

What have you been working on recently?

My first E.P. Flux/Bang which came out 17th June!

Tell us about the mix, how did you put it together, what did you want to represent?

I hold residencies at XOYO and Savage here in London and play between 3 and 6 hour sets, so they are always chopping and changing between House, Disco and Techno to keep the crowd and my ADHD constantly entertained and challenged. It was this feel I wanted to bring to the mix, a lovely journey ending in complete chaos. Dreamy.

Talk us through the British music featured in this mix? Which British artists are you most excited about?

Well… I did a remix for one of my all time favourite British producers Joe Goddard, this isn’t out yet but he’s allowed me to use it! SCORE. So why not open with it! Followed by a good mate of mine ABSOLUTE. who last year release an absolute killer record Fairground, so I asked him for some of his new tracks and this one is sick. The next is a remix by another London based producer Books, he’s making seriously beautiful disco tinged house, check him out! Finally is Tee Mango, I saw him play for Artwork at last years Arts House, and he’s a seriously impressive DJ with the tracks to back it up.

What is on the cards in the immediate future?

A second E.P. which will be later this year! Continued residencies and a few cheeky festival sets. Plus as part of the Savage crew we’ve taken over the toilets in Hi Ibiza (the old Space site) once a month… Imagine a DJ booth surrounded by cubicles and an insane sound system. BONKERS.

Where is the best place in the world you have DJ’d and why?

Last year I played in Ibiza for the first time at Pikes Hotel with my Savage Crew. Starting by the infamous Club Tropicana Pool and finishing in the legendary Freddy’s Bar with all your mates. It was one of those really special party moments you wish you could fully remember.
