7 Sides of Kisch [Interview & Mix] | Selector After Dark

This week’s interview & mix comes from Kisch.

Introduce yourself and tell us about the part of the UK you’re from?

Hi, I’m Kisch, a producer, songwriter and DJ from London. I grew up near Camden Town, which is known for being the place that many UK acts like The Rolling Stones and Amy Winehouse came through on their rise to fame. My musical journey started with me playing in bands around there before I discovered my love of house music and started going out in places like Fabric and the clubs around London Bridge. Things have changed a lot in this city but the nightlife is still strong and growing in different ways.

Tell us about some of your British DJ heroes?

Growing up it was people like Fatboy Slim, Chemical Brothers and Faithless who were smashing the charts, inspiring a generation and creating the “superstar DJ” era. I used to love seeing their DJ sets and live shows. Recently a whole new breed of UK artists have broken through such as Dusky, Jamie Jones, Duke Dumont, and they’re all bringing a great and eclectic mix of music and DJ sets to the table. I love that such a small country continues to be a leader in creativity across all musical genres.

What have you been working on recently?

Loads to be fair! I’ve just released three new tracks in the space of six weeks, the latest Love All Day in particular has been getting some really positive feedback and coverage, so I’m looking forward to seeing how the public responds now that it’s out today.

Tell us about the mix, how did you put it together, what did you want to represent?

I’ve tried to put together a mix that blends all the things I love in this genre; catchy hooks, some big vocals and chunky old school production vibes. I’ve included all three of my own recent releases for listeners to check out as well, I hope they like ’em!

Talk us through the British music featured in this mix? Which British artists are you most excited about?

So apart from my own records, the other UK artist tracks are DJ S.K.T’s Hot Tainted Love and D Ramirez’s Brutal Power. S.K.T’s been releasing a string of quality records since he broke through, this is on his latest EP and I’m feeling the combo of the stabs and hooky vocal, as well as the driving bass line. Brutal Power is one of my favourite records of the year, a proper throwback production wise with a synth line that really sticks in your head. Plus it samples one of the best-known vocals ever, banger!

What is on the cards in the immediate future?

I’m being kept busy by this release at the moment, but it’s only a few weeks before my next EP comes out, a record called Play, which I’m looking forward to as well. I’m remixing a Todd Terry classic too which is coming soon, so plenty to keep my busy for sure!

Where is the best place in the world you have DJ’d and why?

It’s a bit of a cliché answer but it has to be Ibiza. The people there know the music so well so even the more obscure records get amazing reactions. Plus the vibe of the island is so unique. I was lucky enough to headline Es Paradis a few times which was the first club I ever went to there, so that felt pretty cool, like a homecoming. I’m sad I’ll never get to play at my favourite club Space, but hope to play some of the other awesome clubs out there before long.
