7 Sides of Mike Wooller [Interview & Mix] | Selector After Dark

This week’s interview & mix comes from Mike Wooller.

Introduce yourself and tell us about the part of the UK you’re from?

I’m Mike Wooller, a DJ and Producer from London.
Tell us about some of your British DJ heroes?
Technically speaking, DJ EZ will never be beaten, but I’m obsessed with going to see Jackmaster play whenever he’s in town. His selection is always really varied and on point.

What have you been working on recently?

I’ve just released a track I’d been sitting on for a couple of years called ‘Alone’ with Eton Messy on their In:Season compilation. For me, its more important to work on getting your sound nailed and through a lot of experimentation and scrapped projects I’m finally getting ready to release some new music in 2017. I’m not in it for the Beatport Top 10s, I really think what’s important is releasing a solid body of work over a number of years that you can look back and be proud of.

Tell us about the mix, how did you put it together, what did you want to represent?
My background is super varied, and over the years I’ve been bang into trance, UK Garage, Jungle and Funky House among others. More recently I’ve started to explore the Disco angle so this mix starts off with a few of my favourite disco house tracks and gradually works its way into a more mainroom house and techno vibe. For me, music doesn’t have to be current, just good. So there’s only one or two tracks in there that are less than a couple of years old. I try to steer away from the current obsession with newness and this mix reflects that.

Talk us through the British music featured in this mix? Which British artists are you most excited about?
The main guy I need to big up here is Kiwi. I’ve been a big fan of his music ever since I heard his first EP ‘Animals.’ Every single release he puts out just has so much detail and sonically I haven’t heard much that matches up to it, aside from the big guns like Todd Terje, etc. There’s also a 2008 track from Paul Woolford in there called Hierbas. It’s a staple in all of my sets and always gets the crowd going when the breakdown happens. He’s just a mind-blowingly good producer with a back catalogue which could function as a set in itself.

What is on the cards in the immediate future?
Keep your eyes peeled for more releases with Eton Messy, but I’m also looking at self releasing a few bits throughout 2017 which might be a tad more experimental than usual so fingers crossed I don’t end up alienating a whole load of people…

Where is the best place in the world you have DJ’d and why?
Without question Ibiza. The island has slowly become a rich kids’ playground, but there are still some pockets where the original mentality and vibe has managed to live on. Pike’s in San Antonio is one of those spots. I’ve also got to plug Glasgow, those guys know how to party!
