7 Sides of Wayward [Interview & Mix] | Selector After Dark

This week’s interview & mix comes from Wayward.

Introduce yourself and tell us about the part of the UK you’re from?

We are two North Londoners called Louis and Lawrence who both like going out and munching takeaways.

Tell us about some of your British DJ heroes?

Lawrence: I’ve had various British DJ heroes at different stages in my life. When I was younger I was really into Drum’n’,bass, so DJ’s such as Friction, Calibre and DoTheMath had big influences on me getting into electronic music and actually starting to DJ. Since then selectors such as Ben UFO were inspiring for me as they were able to play Garage, House, Disco and Techno plus more and still make the set flow.
At the moment I’d say two of my favourite UK DJ’s are Floating Points and DJ Harvey – both their record boxes are full of unknown gems and they still play vinyl!

Louis: My British DJ hero is Gilles Peterson – his knowledge of music is insane, it goes way beyond an obsession. He kills it both in a club and as a broadcaster and doesn’t show signs of stopping any time soon.

What have you been working on recently?

We just released a single on Silver Bear entitled Orissa and we’re now just wrapping up our next release with them, getting the mix downs right and ready for vinyl manufacturing. We’ve also been playing shows in Andorra, Bristol, London and Leeds and we just finished a project with NBA, writing the soundtracks to a collection of promotional videos.

Tell us about the mix, how did you put it together, what did you want to represent?

To us the mix feels quite contemplative – like how your head feels when it’s mulling over important decisions. When we started working out what to play this wasn’t our intention but obviously tracks with that sort of atmosphere stood out for us for whatever reason. Hopefully some peeps listen to it and use it to work out some important stuff!

Talk us through the British music featured in this mix? Which British artists are you most excited about?

The 55 minute mix opens with a great tune called Woniso from a British guy called K-Lone who was knocking around Leeds playing parties when we were students there. Lovely tune and good to see him getting some support from the likes of Ben UFO. Another highlight is a track from Brighton based Pepe called Linda’s retreat. We’re big fans of this guy and lucky enough to have him remix our track Orissa which is set to drop this month.? There’s a track called Outsiders in there by a dude called Guava which our mate put out on his label Therapy earlier this year – would recommend people to go and check it out. Also couldn’t not include a Joy O track in there – the guy is incredibly important and has had a big say in the landscape of British club music today.

What is on the cards in the immediate future?

We’ve got our next release dropping in the summer, which we’re really excited about and we’re playing some festivals around that time too. Aside from that just pressing buttons in the studio until something sounds good.

Where is the best place in the world you have DJ’d and why?

The best place we have DJ’d is probably in New York, Manhattan at the Matte Black party. It was in a old converted bank with high ceilings and turrets and the main room we played in was insane!
