DJ Maestro Presents: Nina Simone – ‘Little Girls Blue Remixed’ Coming soon to Soundplate Records.
It’s a real honour and privilege to announce that Soundplate Records will be releasing this very special project in the UK. When we first started our label we never dreamed that we would have the opportunity to work on a project featuring music from one of the all-time greats, Nina Simone.
Nina Simone‘s seminal, influential 1958 debut album, Little Girl Blue, Bethlehem Records’ most famous release, stands the test of time. When Dutch DJ and producer Maestro got the chance to remix this album he was thrilled, after receiving official blessing from Nina Simone’s estate, bringing a wealth of talented producers to pay respects to the late Jazz singer and pianist’s canon of work.
Marking a busy year in the anniversary of Nina Simone with a documentary and forthcoming cinema release, now is the perfect time to celebrate the music innovation and genius of Simone, and one of modern music’s most enduring albums. Now, Little Girl Blue has been updated and reworked for a new generation of fans, aligning Nina’s timeless vocals with jazz inspired electronic music, released by emerging international electronic label Soundplate Records.
Maestro has invited some of his favourite new producers to collaborate, like Smoove, Mop Mop, Renegades of Jazz, Gramophonedzie, Fab Samperi, The Reflex and Mees Dierdorp. One thing they all had in common: an overwhelming excitement to work with the original recordings from this iconic album. The result is 14 remixes, each with a unique approach to the original song, and all with a contemporary feel that echoes the sounds of Matthew Herbert, DJ Koze and Africans with Mainframes, while staying respectful to the smokey, percussive, jazz-club arrangements of the originals.
Perhaps not as well known to the general public as Nina’s unmistakable timbres, Bethlehem Records earned its place in Jazz history with the release of debut albums from artists like Carmen McRae, Chris Connor, Herbie Mann and Johnny Hartman. With blessing from the
imprint, Little Girl Blue – Remixed carries on the strong and steep jazz traditions that made Simone’s album such an invaluable release upon its reception. As ever, with Simone’s gorgeous tones at the fore, the music speaks volumes.
