7 Sides of Jason Fernandes [Interview & Mix] | Selector After Dark

This weeks interview & mix comes from Jason Fernandes

Introduce yourself and tell us about the part of the UK you’re from?

I’m Jason Fernandes, from London. I am a techno and electronic DJ / producer / artist.

Tell us about some of your British DJ heroes?

One of my biggest DJ heros is probably be Carl Cox. The guy has such energy and expels that to the crowd when he plays. He feels the music, has one of those most eclectic tastes within the techno community, something which I think can be quite rare.

What have you been working on recently?

I have just finished and released a new album, which is something a bit different to my usual sound. Its very melodic, includes a lot of vocal elements, which add a dynamic addition in term of sound and frequency, which cannot be replicated by any other instruments.

Tell us about the mix, how did you put it together, what did you want to represent?

For the 15 minute mix, I included British artists, whose music I tend to play a lot of. Of course in 15 minutes you may what to cram as much in as possible but techno and the music I make or DJ is all about getting lost in the groove, so its a nice snippet of what you could expect in the club.

The 55 minute mix, is more of the same, but including various artists British and not. The feel and sound ranges from deep and hypnotic, to raw and powerful.

Talk us through the British music featured in this mix? Which British artists are you most excited about?

I have included British artists who I think make great music. Alan Fitzpatrick, Loco & Jam, The Advent, Mark Reeve, Spektre & Slam have all been regular names in my recent track lists. The Brits always bring a very fresh techno/electronic sound, one which the world will take note of. They have done so for decades.

What is on the cards in the immediate future?

I am always working on new music. Next are some new tracks from me in EP form, as well as some dub versions of tracks from my recent album, bringing a more deep, stripped down, raw version of those previously more melodic, vocal tracks.

Where is the best place in the world you have DJ’d and why?

It’s hard to pick, all will often be good for different reasons. Off the top of my head, we put on a label night in London at Corsica Studios, which had a really special vibe, some level of community on the dance floor, everyone felt it, along with a great club sound system. A recent gig in Berlin at Magdalena club was pretty amazing too, with a great sound, great crowd. There are many others!
