7 Sides of Justin Robertson [Interview & Mix] | Selector After Dark

This week’s interview & mix comes from Justin Robertson

Introduce yourself and tell us about the part of the UK you’re from?

My name is Justin Robertson residing in London town, lovely spot rich in history and cultural fun, but currently way too expensive.

Tell us about some of your British DJ heroes?

I cut my teeth as a young proto raver in Manchester in the late 80’s, so I was heavily into Mike Pickering, Martin Prendergast, Jon Da Silva and the Trash DJs. They open my ears to the joy of jack.

What have you been working on recently?

Finishing some paintings for my new art show, mixing my next album as the Deadstock 33s and writing a novel. Also I’ve completed a few remixes for Lisbon Kid, Drones Club, Heretic, Selfie Boy and a few others that are featured in the mix.

Tell us about the mix, how did you put it together, what did you want to represent?

It’s a combination of hypnotism and dynamic riffing combined to enhance ritualistic ecstatic behaviour.

Talk us through the British music featured in this mix?

Some great new producers like Heretic and Jamal H, who know how to combine raw visceral sounds with sophistication and a psychedelic twist. The ever brilliant Mathew Herbert, who just never stops being inventive, Phil Kieran who is always fresh, and I’ve also some of my own bits, along with remixes of them by artists I admire.

Which British artists are you most excited about?

Too many to list, so much great stuff coming from every corner of the globe. It’s a great time for music, I just hope we can nurture that talent and recognize the importance of our nightlife in the UK, and not try and criminalize it or sell it out to property developers.

What is on the cards in the immediate future?

Finish my new record, and just keep on making things. I’m not sure I can do anything else!

Where is the best place in the world you have DJ’d and why?

Gosh that’s a very hard to answer, the world is a huge and fascinating place, and the experiences keep on coming, but I did have a very enlightening time in a Saint Petersburg warehouse last week. Barbarella’s in Croatia also springs to mind, dancing outside is quite the thing.
