7 Sides of Sooney [Interview & Mix] | Selector After Dark

This week’s interview & mix comes from Sooney

Introduce yourself and tell us about the part of the UK you’re from?

I’m Sooney originally from the Staines (massive), West London.

Tell us about some of your British DJ heroes?

Growing up my DJ heroes were people like Slipmatt, Hype, Vibes, Nookie, Goldie, SS, Randall – a lot of the breakbeat/jungle/hardcore movement in the ‘90s. It was a golden era for fancy music and still is a massive influence on electronic music to date.

What have you been working on recently?

I have a few projects at the moment. I’ve just dropped a release for Spanish imprint El Row Music and in November I have a release coming from Shadow Child’s Food Music imprint which I’m really happy about. Otherwise, I’m working on new solo tracks for 2018 as well as a few collaborations – one with Citizenn and another with the godfather of British rave, Slipmatt. Slipmatt is a massive part of British electronic music and dance culture and, even though people say you shouldn’t meet your heroes, he’s an absolute geezer. I’m really excited to see what comes out of the project.

Tell us about the mix, how did you put it together, what did you want to represent?

The mix represents my past and present, with remixes from some of my favourite rave tracks from back in the day and a few new originals. The artists i’ve chosen have been a massive part of 2017 for me. Brett Gould I met last year at The Lightbox in London has become a really good friend and introduced me to so many people in the industry which has been amazing. Citizenn I toured with in the UK and Ibiza a bit and, like Brett, has become someone I really feel lucky to have around me. Finally, Jamie Jones who, without him, I wouldn’t be writing this right now and will always be grateful to him for putting my Back To The Music EP this Summer on Hot Creations.

Talk us through the British music featured in this mix? Which British artists are you most excited about?

I’d definitely keep an eye on the aforementioned Brett Gould.

What is on the cards in the immediate future?

Just working hard on my releases for 2018.

Where is the best place in the world you have DJ’d and why?

Well, this is my first year of doing anything on the international circuit so I don’t have a lot to compare things to but Ibiza this summer was amazing. I can’t wait to tour more, it’s been a life’s dream to get an opportunity like this and I’ve been loving every minute of it.
