What Are Album Equivalent Units?
Because fans consume music in completely different ways now, some stream on Spotify, others buy digital tracks on iTunes or Bandcamp. The industry needed a standardized math formula to level the playing field.
This formula converts digital engagement into a standard “sale” using two main metrics: SEA and TEA.
1. SEA (Streaming Equivalent Albums)
SEA tracks how many times your music needs to be streamed to equal the purchase of one physical album.
Under current Billboard streaming rules, not all streams are treated equally. Billboard heavily favors “premium” streams (plays from users paying for a monthly subscription on Spotify or Apple Music) over ad-supported free tiers or video streams.
- The Album Rule: It takes 1,500 premium streams to equal one Album Sale.
