Facebook Set to Start Paying Artists / Rights-Holders Soon

The worlds biggest social network is starting to pay video creators and have reportedly started talks with record labels..

With all the controversy surrounding renumeration of artists and rights-holders at the moment with Soundcloud, Apple Music, Youtube etc etc Facebook has been pretty quiet about their plans to monitize the media content on their platform..  Until now.

Facebook’s video service has exploded in the past few years. In fact ever since June 2014 the platform has reported more than 1 billion videos views / day. The number of video posts per person has increased 75% globally and 94% in the US. Now Facebook have announced that it is adding ads to some videos and has begun to pay creators as much as 55% of ad revenue.

So far the program has been restricted to major media companies. We expect the service will roll out to more page owners over the coming weeks. Facebook have also started ‘secret talks’ with some the major labels about ‘getting into music’. No word on what a Facebook Music Service might look like yet but with the explosion of video on the platform we imagine it might be a model similar to Youtube’s adverting revenue share system.

Facebook have the potential to seriously disrupt the music industry with 1.44 billion users and 798 million mobile users on the service every day, enough that they, in theory could match Apple Music’s potential user base. We will be keeping an eye out for further developments, Like our Facebook page for all the latest news!
