Funkynessa’s Artist Spotlight: DJ Jigga

Words by Funkynessa

After a long break Funkynessa is back with another artist spotlight. This time her focus is on a DJ, Jigga from Cardiff.

Jigga is currently causing a stir in the scene, all the way from Wales! He is a part of some of the biggest garage promotions including Pure Stush and Ace of Spades. He plays a wide variety of music including Hip Hop, R&B, Bashment, Uk Funky and UKG. DJ Jigga has also supported chart artists such as Mavado, Chipmunk, Tinie Tempah and N-Dubs.

DJ Jigga originally from America, moved to the UK (Wales) when he was 11 years old. In 2007, after being

encouraged and inspired by a few friends & a younger brother who were also DJ’s Jigga got serious with his DJing. Jigga began to learn how to mix UKG (UK Garage) but as garage wasn’t as popular he ventured into other genres such as Hip Hop & R&B. DJ’S that were already widely in the DJ circuit such as DJ Fonti and DJ EZ inspired Jigga because they were what as seen as the legends for mixing different genres and for their technical ability.

In 2008 DJ Jigga was featured on a mixtape with Maxwell D which had over 10,000 downloads and also received good reviews around the world via various mixtape sites. After this success he was asked to join the Slip N Slide DJ Roster (Rick Ross Label), whom put out an international mixtape, Jigga’s mix was UK funky which went out world wide & had over 15,000 downloads in the first few weeks.

Since 2008 DJ Jigga has been booked for every Twice as Nice event in Wales as well being apart of charity events such as the Haiti Disaster and Miss Wales. He was also the DJ for Britain’s next top model. He has also held a residency at Cardiff’s number one club Glam from the beginning and has moved around the UK playing at events such as Garage Nation, Hed Kandi and Sun City.

DJ Jigga has been making mixtapes of various genres. He recently started a project with the support from two other dj’s called the league of extraordinary Welsh men focusing on Grime, House & Funky and UKG. We have been supporting Jigga from the beginning of the league of extraordinary Welsh Men all the mixes have received great feedback.

One thing I love about DJ’s like Jigga is that they always keep their ears open for the hottest tunes no matter the genre and are never afraid to feature them on their mixes or in the clubs.

Jigga has already played alongside some popular DJ’s such as Marcus Nasty, DJ Pioneer, Dj MA1 and more. He is also on radio Cardiff (FM) where he has interviewed many artists and producers including Tinie Tempah. He hopes this is a stepping-stone for landing a role on a bigger station. He is also looking to expand his name and brand to other cities such as Bristol, Birmingham and London.
