Event Review : Tiga XOYO Residency w/ Patrick Topping + Jonas Rathsman

Tiga and his talented friends served up a carnival-esque treat at XOYO, London this weekend.

Tiga, renowned for varied and often surprising sounds, is a quarter of the way through a marathon residency at London club, XOYO. The club itself seems to suit the Canadian DJ and what he wants to achieve from his time there – you are transported to a different world. The smell of incense as you walk through the door is the first assault of your senses, then you hear the bass (the sound was consistently excellent all night) and finally its the lights, blazing and glaring down on the crowd.

The night had a distinctly european ‘feel’ and opener Jonas Rathsman, already a favourite with the London crowd, did nothing to quash this – his soaring sounds drawing the punters immediately to the dance floor. ‘Conium’ just one highlight from a set punctuated with special moments.

Manoeuvring ourselves onto one of XOYO’s many platforms we had a great view for Tiga, whose European tones were also blended with elements of acid house and techno. It is his ability to continually keep a crowd guessing that makes him an ‘must see.’ It also helps when you have ‘Bugatti’ tucked away in your locker, which he dropped as he closed his set, much to the crowds delight.

Finally, Patrick Topping took to the booth, immediately evoking a carnival atmosphere within the club, building up to big drops with genre-hopping sounds, he was toying with the mob in front of him and clearly enjoying those ‘there it is’ moments. Midway through his set Topping invited us to ‘meet at the club’ through his excellent collaboration with Green Velvet, ‘Voicemail’, a superb focal point in a quite brilliant set.

Tiga promised that his residency would be ‘non-stop’ and on last nights evidence it certainly lives up to expectations.
