7 Sides of Brassica [Mix & Interview] | Selector After Dark

This weeks Mix & Interview comes from Brassica

Introduce yourself and tell us about the part of the UK you’re from?

My real name is Michael. I’m originally from Folkestone , which is a slightly run-down seaside town in Kent. I’ve been living in London for several years but I’m about to move back to Folkestone for a giant creative push without worrying about paying London rental prices. The town is currently undergoing a regeneration process and they are encouraging artists to live and work there in exchange for cheap rent on live, work and retail spaces. I recommend it to anyone who wants to concentrate on their art without financial stress.

Can you tell us a bit about what you’ve been working on recently?

Well for a long time I’ve been working on my album, ‘Man is Deaf’ which came out in November on Civil Music. Since I handed that in I’ve been working on more new music, some remixes (there’s a Feel My Bicep remix, one for Becky Hill and one for the Rothmans label out there at the moment and a couple more on the way), lots of mix-tapes for people like you, my live show and general future plans – mainly how to keep making music and avoid the “real world”.

Cool, tell us about some of your British DJ Heroes and influences in general?

Honestly, I regard some of my friends as the best DJs I’ve heard and I’m not being biased here. A guy called Peter Mangalore from Manchester is phenomenal but little known still. Ali Renault is also an incredible DJ. They both play the exact range of music I enjoy hearing when I’m out – anything from total cheese to the bleak and harrowing.

And what’s on the cards in the immediate future?

To make more music. Getting better at production and songwriting. Collaborating with others to make interesting music. Perfecting my live set and hopefully performing more often. Anything else would be a bonus.

And finally, where is the best place in the world you have DJ’d and why?

I guess I’m not a DJ in the strictest sense of the word although perhaps it doesn’t make a difference from an audience perspective whether I use synths or decks. Only the nerds among us care about things other than being bathed in good sounds at a club.

The last time I played in Madrid at Club Specka for the Femur night was a standout moment where the crowd went absolutely nuts and I thought to myself ‘actually, I’m quite good at this’.  The club was built in the 80s and hadn’t been decorated since. It was like the Hitman and Her TV studio but much dirtier. It was beautiful.
