Selector Afterdark – Ghost Writerz by The Selector on Mixcloud

Introduce yourself and tell us about the part of the UK you’re from?

The Ghost Writerz came together in the blue borough – Lewisham, London – via a West Country connection and, given our influences and inspiration, from Jamaica to the Bronx and back to London.

Can you tell us a bit about what you’ve been working on recently?

Promoting our new single – Back It Up – which has been nicing up air waves and which Tru Thoughts records recently managed to bag, using a proton pack.

Sounds great, cant wait to hear the new stuff! Can you talk us through the mix?

That’s easy. Ghost Writerz represent the New Wave of UK Sound System Culture. That culture stepped off the Windrush and has long resonated throughout the streets of London and throughout the UK. We are the latest apparitions of this powerful form. When compiling the mix we wanted to bring in as many people as we could that we admire, and who are part of this new wave.

And can you give us a taste of some of the British artists you’ve featured in your mix?

For us, Stylo G is heading up this charge of the new generation, bringing sound system music into people’s lives. We have also gone more underground and showcased people that we feel are truly pushing the ting. So shout out to DJ Vadim, Pete Cannon, Tu Nice, The Sea, our brothers from Unit 137 and onlyjoe, especially Jago and Galak. Run Tingz, J Man and Mr Benn from Bristol, the Mouse Outfit from Manchester and of course, the godfather, Demolition Man.

Some really strong names in there! Can you tell us about some of your British DJ Heroes and influences in general?

Anyone who has put a proper hand built reggae sound system at the core of their operations or spent time digging in crates bringing back the forgotten names that might have faded or passed away and mixed those up with current supernatural business and music of this time: Those are our peoples.

And what’s on the cards in the immediate future?

We are bringing some supernatural vibes to the UK, and looking to take those worldwide, working with Tru Thoughts Recordings and their brand new, specialist sound system music arm: Sharp & Ready

Very exciting indeed! And finally, where is the best place in the world you have DJ’d and why?

We’re just getting started, but our track with Pete Cannon called ‘How We Living’ got five rewinds at Lovebox Festival in London this July 2014. Hearing big DJs like Toddla T, Mistajam, Charlie Sloth, Monki, B Traits and Ras Kwame dropping our music on radio was a real highlight for us… we can’t wait to take it to the people ourselves. We’re really looking forward to the rest of the festivals this summer, and exploring the world through our sound beyond that. It’s #GWzAllTheWay! Jheeeeez!
