7 Sides of Hugo Barritt [Interview & Mix] | Selector After Dark

This weeks interview and mix comes from Hugo Barritt

Introduce yourself and tell us about the part of the UK you’re from?

Hi I’m Hugo, natively from New Zealand although I’ve spent half my life in London. I swore an oath of allegiance to the queen once so guess that makes me British too!

Can you tell us a bit about what you’ve been working on recently?

I have a few releases in the pipeline early next year, which I’m really excited about. My track ‘Departure’ on Italian label ‘Nordik Net’, with Sascha Dive on remix duty. I have another limited vinyl release next year on the new Label ‘Construct’ with some other great British artists on there too. I also plan to return back to my roots with an EP on my ‘mother label’, Vitalik.  It was the first label that really brought my sound to peoples ears so I’m super excited to have plans to work with them again.

And can you talk us through the mix?

I put it together on a sunny Autumn’s day in Berlin. I like to move between old and new, combining deep vibes with solid grooves. I also wanted to share sounds from a few European artists that have really influenced and inspired me.

Nice, give us a taste of some of your favourite British artists at the moment?

To be honest I normally don’t pay much attention to where artists are from – some I obviously know but a lot I don’t.  UK artists I am always keen to hear are Isherwood, Alex Jones plus the artists in my mix, however there’s plenty of others too

Cool, tell us about some of your British DJ Heroes and influences in general?

For house music – Craig Richards, he’s played a crucial role with Fabric, both in his sets and the programming. I’ve heard so much amazing music played there consistently, more than anywhere else over my time in London.  Other DJ’s I know and respect off the top of my head.  Rob Mello, Andy Blake, Geddes, Mr Shiver to name a few. These guys have made great parties over the years, something I really appreciate.

And what’s on the cards in the immediate future?

So first thing will be my upcoming ep ‘Penumbra’, the second release on Construct. Gerd Janson and Phillip Lauer (Tuff City Kids) have done two remixes for the ep and the support it’s been getting has bowled me over.  That’s out 8th December, then after that I have my EP on Nordik Net, which I mentioned, plus further releases on Construct and Vitalik. Early 2015 I will also be settling back into the Studio as well as playing some gigs in Italy and London.

And finally, where is the best place in the world you have DJ’d and why?

Currently still London for me, there’s nowhere with a pulse like it due to it’s rich multi-culture vibe.
