7 Sides of Mak & Pasteman [Interview & Mix] | Selector After Dark

This weeks interview & mix comes from Mak & Pasteman

Introduce yourself and tell us about the part of the UK you’re from?

We’re Craig McNamara & Matt Bridgewater AKA Mak & Pasteman. Craig’s from Huddersfield, Matt’s from Peterborough. We started writing music together in Leeds back in 2010.

Can you tell us a bit about what you’ve been working on recently?

We’ve just wrapped up our next 4 track EP on Materials which is our own imprint. We’ve got some garage edits that are dropping soon and another release on Redlight’s Lobster Boy label, We’ve also just remixed Gorgon City’s next single

And can you talk us through the mix?

We play right across the board in our sets and on radio but wanted this mix to represent the exciting music that is coming out of the underground in the UK. This year has been a great year for underground UK music, there has been a lot of success stories and a lot of great music that has come out, we are both really excited about how the music is changing, embracing darker tones and techno aesthetics.

Nice, give us a taste of some of your favourite British artists at the moment?

We both really like the sounds that are coming out of Bristol, this isn’t a new thing though! Bristol has always been a hotspot for forward thinking underground music and we both like the fusion of techno with dub step/grime. There’s a definite techno slant to this mix, Dense & Pika, Moss & Hodge all embrace the aesthetics that we try to show with our music.

Cool, tell us about some of your British DJ Heroes and influences in general?

Anthony Weatherall, techno and electro pioneer, around from the start of the UK rave scene, he stuck to his guns and he’s still around today. Randall, one of the best D&B DJ’s, true jungle pioneer and lots of memories listening to old rave tapes with him on.

And what’s on the cards in the immediate future?

We’re keen to keep developing Materials and build up a family of likeminded artists. We’ll be continuing our Rinse Show, first Friday of every month 1-3am and just trying and keep pushing the boundaries with every record we put out.

And finally, where is the best place in the world you have DJ’d and why?

This year we got the opportunity to play on the mainstage at Hideout festival. We played for 4,000 people and it was as surreal as it was special. We were both on top form and the energy was incredible.
