7 Sides of Mella Dee [Interview & Mix] | Selector After Dark

This weeks Interview & Mix comes from Mella Dee.

Introduce yourself and tell us about the part of the UK you’re from?

I’m Mella Dee, living in London right now, but i’m from a town in South Yorkshire called Doncaster.

Can you tell us a bit about what you’ve been working on recently?

Lots of stuff, just trying to get the best out of myself basically, putting all my influences into making a sound that represents me to the fullest really and just trying to get everything right for forthcoming releases.

And can you talk us through the mix?

Its just music I like to play out in the club, it’s always about that darker edge, but I like to make sure it still makes you wanna dance, and largely for me very British sounding, its a massive part of me and what I do in general anyway.

Nice, give us a taste of some of your favourite British artists at the moment?

Hodge, Troy Gunner, Kowton, Randomer, Benton all these guys and more to be fair, seems like there’s a wealth of good underground stuff coming through at the moment, especially in the UK Techno vein, which has a distinct difference to a lot of European techno. So that’s basically the style of British music that’s in the mix, along with the more hardcore/jungle orientated sound that’s around right now. Bass heavy, atmospheric and generally quite dark.

Cool, tell us about some of your British DJ Heroes and influences in general?

There’s so many that have had a massive influence on my sound, Dillinja, EL-B, Loefah, Wiley, EZ, Slipmatt, Zed Bias, Slimzee, Mala to name a few, they’ve all had there own style and sound, and all been influential on the way I make music to this day.

And what’s on the cards in the immediate future?

More music, more releases. A beat tape is the first and foremost thing though, a compilation of my own productions from the last half of this year, heavy jungle/hardcore influence throughout which will be coming via Digital Soundboy.

And finally, where is the best place in the world you have DJ’d and why?

Hard to really choose just one, I think Fabric is up there though, its just one of those places you always want to get the chance to play, so actually having that opportunity more than once is amazing. It’s really good to place in the different rooms as well, the vibes never the same in each room so that’s something I really enjoy about it.
