7 Sides of Moxie [Interview & Mix] | Selector After Dark

This weeks interview & mix comes from Moxie.

Introduce yourself and tell us about the part of the UK you’re from?

Hi I’m Moxie and I’m from North London.  The first place I ever played out was in Camden, which is where I grew up, and I still live here so it holds a lot of sentimental value for me.

Can you tell us a bit about what you’ve been working on recently?

Recently I put out a free compilation via my Soundcloud called Moxie Presents Vol.1 which features music from producers I support on my Radio 1 & NTS radio shows. It had a lot of support right across the board which I was super happy about.  As well as that I’ve been gigging around the UK and Europe and prepping for RBMA in Tokyo where I’ll be going out with NTS to do a bunch of interviews and broadcast some special radio shows for the station.

And can you talk us through the mix?

For this mix I wanted to do something that had a particular rhythmic flow to it, so I included some of my favourite tracks that dip into afro beat, dub and disco. There’s mostly new stuff in here apart from a couple oldies but golden gems.

Nice, give us a taste of some of your favourite British artists at the moment?

There’s so much amazing coming out of the UK and especially Bristol.  I realized after I put this mix together it features 3 artists from Bristol. One of whom is Shanti Celeste who is a fantastic producer and DJ who people are really starting to notice.  Also a new producer called Ishmael who I recently discovered and included two of his tracks from his new EP coming out via the WOLF label, definitely one of my favourite things to be released this year.

Cool, tell us about some of your British DJ Heroes and influences in general?

There are so many amazing UK DJS that have inspired me from when i was younger such as Sarah & Harry Love from the UK Hip-Hop Days, Sarah especially as there weren’t that many female djs at the time and so she was a big inspiration for me.  Also Mary Ann Hobbs, she helped me discover Dubstep through her Radio 1 show.  That opened me up to so much music i didn’t know about, and opened the doors to a whole new sound at the time called Dubstep.  DJS such as Mala, Loefah Youngstar, Slimzee, Kode9, Four Tet have all inspired me in their own way over the years.

And what’s on the cards in the immediate future?

I’ll be working on the next Moxie Presents Vol.2 , which will be released next year, and generally always gigging about and working on my radio shows.

And finally, where is the best place in the world you have DJ’d and why?

I’ve played in some very cool places around the world but one festival that i always love going back to has to be Glastonbury.  I think because I went there as a kid from such a young age it holds a lot of memories for me and so to DJ there is a real honour.  The year before last I played the closing set at Bloc9 and it was one of the funnest sets I’ve played.  Can’t wait to be back next year!
