7 Sides of SYV [Interview & Mix] | Selector AfterDark

This weeks Interview & Mix comes from SYV

Selector AfterDark – SYV by The Selector on Mixcloud

Introduce yourself and tell us about the part of the UK you’re from?

My name is Primo, I’m 20 and I’m half of SYV. I’m from Hounslow, West London. Which is around the corner from Heathrow. Not much goes on but we have a mean selection of curry houses.

Can you tell us a bit about what you’ve been working on recently?

We’re currently in the process of writing our EP. We’ve worked with some realy talented writers and singers throughout and we feel this EP holds our best pieces of music yet. So you’re going to have to be patient.

And can you talk us through the mix?

Even though our music carries a specific sound, it is heavily influenced by so many different kinds of music such as funk, soul and disco. But there is more to it than that. I listen to techno, minimal D ‘n’ B and loads of other dark types of music and I think that’s where the wonky percussion in our tracks comes into play. I fully represented SYV and all the other types of sounds that inspire us to make ours.

Nice, give us a taste of some of your favourite British artists at the moment?

I played tracks that I got a vibe off of and that was purely it. There are a few dudes on the block who I know are going to blow. You’ve got the NVOY guys whose track “You Are” was just released on Black Butter’s “Spread Love Vol. 5” compilation – definitely check that out. Billon recently sent me a piece of gold titled “Nothing”, which carries a strong garage vibe with a modern twist. I then received the rest of the EP… MAD! Definitely check the “Dive In EP” on Rinse.  We’ve mentioned this dude in every interview but we’ve got to do it again. Linden Jay. This guys on a whole new level of wonky. His new project “Born Dirty” which is with Son Of Kick, just dropped an absolute belter titled “Don’t Stop Get It” featuring Kid Sister. Give that one a twirl and you’ll see what I mean by wonky.

Cool, tell us about some of your British DJ Heroes and influences in general?

I don’t really have any DJ heroes to be honest I mean some people are noticeably sick like EZ but I wouldn’t say I have any “Heroes”.

And finally, where is the best place in the world you have DJ’d and why?

To be honest I’m not one of the DJs who’s been blessed to play in some insane venues, but the best place I’ve played I’d still say is my best mate Blu’s party at her house in Chertsey. The very talented and my good friend Edd Tetris (Tetris) is the sound system king. He’s built his sound system from scratch and it kicks hard. He brought it up to Blu’s and we all just went back to back to back all night. So much love to my Eastbourne/Hastings family. They taught me how to DJ and always believed in me. Thanks for having me in for the mix, it’s not spotless but I hope you enjoy it.
