7 Sides of Wax Wings [Interview & Mix] | Selector After Dark

This week’s interview & mix comes from Wax Wings

Introduce yourself and tell us about the part of the UK you’re from?

The reason I wear so much black must be down to being born in goth town Whitby, Yorkshire. Hi, I’m Wax Wings and I currently reside in London.

Tell us about some of your British DJ heroes?

Respect where its due, D.A.V.E the Drummer and Chris Liberator definitely played a huge part in the discovery of my techno roots. Finding these two (whilst very underage) in a late night affair in Leeds made the shift from my metal and rock background into the world of electronic music.

What have you been working on recently?

Planning on showing many more facets to Wax Wings in the coming year; I’ve been exploring deeper and emotional directions, blending song and cinema. Getting back into the studio to finish my debut album has been an amazing experience. Especially when having the chance to work with such crazy talented vocalists alongside. I’m very excited to showcase this.

Tell us about the mix, how did you put it together, what did you want to represent?

I wanted to display two flip sides in a four four club sound, presenting warmth and melody in the start, moving through to a drum and percussion focused techno after hours. Recently after working in lower tempos in my album, I felt I wanted to refresh my love for the club, whether it be opening an event or taking the crowd through the night.

Talk us through the British music featured in this mix? Which British artists are you most excited about?

My British selection presents six tracks that work around texture and atmosphere, contrasting warm melodies with lo-fi, acid and distorted percussion. Buz Ludzha’s (aka The Cyclist) recent EP ’Basslines For Life’ totally blew me away; his innovative use of effects to warp both drums and progressions into these masterpieces are both beautiful and punk. Anna Wall is also an incredible talent and I am so excited to see where this bundle of energy will go in the coming year. I decided to open my mix with her remix of ‘Continuum’; a juxtaposition of atmospheric space and crunchy percussion made from field recorded samples, taking you on a emotive cruise into a driving crescendo, total bliss.

What is on the cards in the immediate future?

The immediate future holds my third EP, which is currently in its final stages. Also from my previous release, ’The Love Inside Me’ Remixes have just dropped and are being well received which is bonus points, check them out.

Where is the best place in the world you have DJ’d and why?
Recently on tour with Maya Jane Coles and Friends in Japan has to have been one of my favourite experiences to date, it was perfect. I couldn’t choose between the two dates because both Tokyo and Osaka had so many great things on offer. The crowd, culture, food, friends and doing what you love most, in your favourite place on this planet; really doesn’t get much better than that.
