A Few Minutes With Shacklo

Ahead of our our release with Shacklo this Thursday, we caught up with the man behind the music for a quick chat…

avatars-000127574374-64r4fe-t500x500How did you get started in music and when did you first start making house?

I’ve always been a big fan of a range of music, started playing the drums from a young age then got vinyl decks about 15. From then on I started making electronic music with two other lads and progressed onto making house from there.

Tell us about Vigilante (the up-coming single), what influenced you to make it? How did it come together?

Big influence from Ten Walls in this track – when I first heard his productions their were unique sounds that instantly stood out for me. They complimented other elements of the track so well and I wanted to try and capture part of that whilst adding my own take on it. I actually finished the track with a different bassline, tried it in a club and knew something wasn’t quite right. Revisited it after that and got the end product I was looking for!

The track is getting a huge response from DJ’s.. What makes a great deep house track?

Lot’s of different aspects to be honest! For me, personally you need a bassline that will carry the track – but it then needs to be well balanced with the correct percussion / drums / stabs etc which can be tricky to get right. I think great tracks need to have their own sound as well which make them recognisable in a club.

Whats the best gig you have played and why?

I used to be resident on the Lost in Ibiza boat parties and every week without fail the boat would be bouncing! We had a Funktion One soundsystem which I love playing on and the crowd were there just to have an amazing time. Watching the sunset out on the ocean always makes it pretty special. There was one particular party with Richy Ahmed and Russ Yallop playing as well that stood out.

Cool, great people to play alongside! Who else are you listening to the the moment?

I’m listening to a lot of releases on Sante’s Avotre label – They are really nailing it for me at the moment. I’m also a massive fan of Jesse Perez – a very underrated DJ / producer in my opinion. On top of that, I’m enjoying homegrown talent like Majesty, Cristoph and Patrick Topping.

So, so who would you most like collaborate with on a track?

So many I could pick for this… But I would probably say Deetron – such an incredible producer. I would love to see how he uses some of his hardware in the studio.

Where is the best place in the world you have played so far?

I played in Miami for the WMC a couple of years ago which was quality – the place is electric at that time of the year, such a good vibe. But I think Ibiza is still my favorite place to play.

Cool, anything exciting you have coming up in 2015?

I’ve just got back out to Sydney so I’m hoping for a productive year. Just going to spend as much time as possible producing and you should see quite a few releases. Off to Burning Man as well, not to play unfortunately but looking forward to the experience!

Great, and finally where can we find you online?

You can keep updated on my Soundcloud (Soundcloud.com/Shacklo) and Facebook pages (Facebook.com/Shacklo). I’m also doing a monthly guestmix for the Culprit radio show on Bondi FM so look out for that!

‘Vigilante’ by Shacklo will be released on Beatport this Thursday (19.02.15) and worldwide on 06.03.15.
