Album Review: Kon – ‘On My Way’

Kon

Following a string of edits of timeless classics by the likes of James Brown, Kool & the Gang and Hall & Oates, Kon has released an 11 track album consisting of original material on BBE Records.

Having previously worked with Amir on their ‘Off Track’ compilations which featured numerous R&B/soul tracks (including many of his ingenious edits), Kon, real name Christian Taylor, has called upon select vocalists to create the heavily disco influenced ‘On My Way’. Although being favoured for his love of the psychedelic dance genre, and being called ‘the best disco DJ in the world’ by Gilles Peterson, Taylor’s album is a delectable mix of house, soul, R&B and nu-disco.

Taylor has undoubtedly hit the mark in terms of vocalists, with songstress Amy Douglas providing a rich and powerful voice, reminiscent of Aretha Franklin, which effortlessly complies with the groovy productions on both ‘All Night (Everybody)’ and ‘Blow Me…A Kiss’, as well as the smooth and sensual yet subtle touch from Ben Westbeech on the infectious ‘You Don’t Know (I’ve Been Looking for You)’. However, it is Induce, the featured artist on ‘Love Shine’ who stands out with resonant, soulful vocals that feel as if he has just come straight from an 80’s/90’s R&B track. It’s not just the featured tracks that emanate on this record, with ‘Yeah Yeah’ sounding like a vintage track from the late 70’s disco era. With the title track ending the journey of revived disco, it holds a feel of ambience yet still maintains the notable, foot-tapping beat.

Taking 3 years to compose, this album is absolutely worth the time and Taylor’s mesmerising, notable productions of these memorable tracks have easily surpassed himself as more than just a digger who once helped Kanye West with his astounding and extensive knowledge and collection of vinyl. On My Way is unmistakably a must have record for any disco fan or even just a lover of perpetual music.
