Catching up with The Playaz..

The new and keenly awaited ‘Flavours vol 7’ EP from legendary dnb label Playaz hits the download sites this month and features tracks from the likes of Konichi, Soulculture, Pleasure and label newcomers Chromatic.

To coincide with this veritable feast, some of the artists shared a few tasty bits of goss with us…

Konichi told us about his dream festival

‘,This year’s one has just gone passed but I love the look of Snowbombing festival and would love to play there, I’m not sure how our music would work there if I’m honest, but its surrounded by mountains and snow so I guess anything goes! ‘

Philth & P-Fine were chuffed with their unusual colab ‘Tired’ on this EP. Philth explains how it came about

‘,
I have known P-Fine for a few years now and we have performed quite a few sets together. His flow and presence really complement my sets. It was after one of these gigs when the vibes were flowing that we first discussed the idea of writing some music together…However Tired actually started out a Facebook rant! Pete had written this long and kind of angry poem on his page and I asked him if it was some bars he had been working on. That was never the intention but he immediately took a liking to the idea. A big inspiration was Warhead by Krust!’

Serum’s track on Flavours is called ‘Tommy Gun’. But he says he can’t remember where the moniker Serum came from…

’I’ve used loads of different names in the past but that was what I’d used on the demo for the first track that got picked up so it just stuck.’

You’ll catch Pleasure at Innovation in the Sun this year,

‘,Playing at Inno is always good fun; I’ll draw for the crowd and whatever the flavour may be expect it to be fresh!’

Damage Report’s track ‘Go Bye’ was inspired by bygone times

‘,My thinking behind it was I wanted to make a tune that had some good vibes, and for it to feel a little bit like the older style of drum and bass (with more sub than harsh aggressive baseline) and tried to give the track some character on the drums and a really feeling of good percussion…’

Dialogue’s track ‘How Easy’ has had heavyweight radio support from the likes of Kiss and 1Xtra. He says

‘, Without sounding cliché, it’s a dream come true – when I get the radio support it inspires me to make more music. It’s a big look and I think it’s important to your confidence as a producer..’

And T>I recalls when his track ‘Deep Within’ was first dropped on Kiss

‘,I was in the studio working on some other projects, I fell asleep and missed the show to be honest but then someone linked it on my facebook page the next day which was a very nice surprise!’

NC-17 (and Soulculture) share their plans for the Summer

‘, it seems like a busy one for both crews – Soulculture is playing a bunch of shows in Europe including Greece and Bestival. I am doing some pretty cool one off shows in America that I am really looking forward to, plus the big show in Toronto, the DNB FEDERATION event with DJ Hype, ANNIX, PHANTASY and myself…’

And finally Nu Elementz tell us about their track ‘MDMA’…

’we would like to hear it played at festivals, it always seems to go down well there…’
