7 Sides of Mason Collective [Interview & Mix] | Selector Afterdark

This week’s interview & mix comes from Mason Collective

Introduce yourself and tell us about the part of the UK you’re from?

We’re just three friends from South Manchester that have known each other for the longest. We all had a musical upbringing and got onto the scene roughly around the same time so it made sense to link up and build something together. It’s been a few years since we started Mason and the formula that we’ve got now is perfect.

Tell us about some of your British DJ heroes?

Gotta mention Jamie Jones. He’s someone that we’ve looked up to for years now and admire everything he’s done from the music he’s put out to the label he’s built.

What have you been working on recently?

We just held our biggest event to date last weekend with Kaluki which was so crazy. We had 4000 people spread across 3 venues in Manchester Academy and it was honestly our best party to date. The energy was crazy. We’ve also been in the studio every day recently. Ideas have been flowing and we feel like we’ve got our sound on point. It’s great to see so much support on our new tracks from so many heavyweight DJs. We have some massive releases locked in that we can’t wait for everyone to hear.

Tell us about the mix, how did you put it together, what did you want to represent?

We just had fun with it to be honest. We’ve been playing most of these tracks out regularly and we wanted to represent our sound.

Talk us through the British music featured in this mix? Which British artists are you most excited about?

Everything that Josh Baker has been putting out is such a groove. He’s a talented producer that’s had some solid releases recently. Same to AJ Christou who’s also blowing up at the moment.

What is on the cards in the immediate future?

Our latest EP is out on Stacey Pullen’s label Blackflag ?on April 9th which we’re super confident about. We have our own MVSON Colonnade stage at Parklife Festival this year which is dope, and will be playing at Lost and Found, Hideout Festival at Kalypso and the House Work boat party, and a load more festivals and international shows throughout the summer.

Where is the best place in the world you have DJ’d and why?

It’s always a sick feeling playing to big crowds in clubs and at festivals but last summer we threw a limited capacity villa party in Barcelona during OFF week which most of our close friends came out for. The vibe all day was unreal and to look down onto the city of Barcelona while you’re playing on a Funktion One powered system strung up next to the pool in a mansion was a blessing.
