Review: Kid Tricky | Super 8 Avenue

126078You may know Marc JB as ½ of the hugely successful UK dance outfit Bimbo Jones, having been on remix duties for the likes of Rihanna, Pink and Britney Spears. Fortunately if this isn’t your cup of tea the producer, DJ and instrumentalist has a few other tricks up his sleeve, not least his chilled electronic alias Kid Tricky.

The album in question Super 8 Avenue appears meticulously crafted from the outset and shows surprising depth, melting genres relatively seamless throughout. The sun-soaked dub vibes of ‘Undercover in ’89’ are sure to be a firm favourite amongst fans new and old, whilst tracks like ‘Hollow Man’ seem made for those quiet nights on the headphones.

Unlike many of 51luIBUt2PL._SL500_AA280_the genre, the record forges a wide soundscape of genres without losing any clarity. He has made a conscious effort to ensure that each track carefully cuts itself apart from the rest. The album refreshingly remainins clear from the over-looped chill compilation pitfall.

The title track offers a small nod towards Bimbo Jones in some respects, not necessarily a floorfiller, but still a distinct dance groove – the funky trip-hop riffs are met with synths and a vocal line reminiscent of an early Röyksopp, a comparison which ebbs in more and more as the album plays rack up. The closing track ‘Orpheus Says’ is a euphoric wash of synth and distant vocals. Its piano hook maintains a groove which flows throughout the album, making it an intelligent body of work few Trip Hop, Chill and Electronic fans would want to miss.
