Spotify’s New “In Residence” Feature : Who, What, Where & Why

Spotify have launched a brand new feature to compete with Apple’s Global Beats1 Radio Station. We answer some of the burning questions about it..

SPOTIFY IN RESIDENCE

What is Spotify In Residence?

Spotify In Residence is a new series of celebrity curated playlists which play more like podcasts with commentary from the celeb ‘hosts’.

Who are the ‘celebrity hosts’?

The first names to be announced are: Big Nastie, Jungle, Steve Jones (Sex Pistols) and electronic music duo Tonga. We expect many more are still to be announced..

Why Are Spotify Launching This Feature?

This seems to be a direct reaction to Apple’s Beats1 which has been one of the most successful  features of the new Apple Music streaming platform.

How is it different to Beats1?

Spotify In Residence is more of a series of Podcasts (always available on demand) than a radio station. All shows are pre-recorded and there is currently only four shows but many more are expected soon. It’s not yet clear how many of the playlists each resident will create. The key difference seems to be the format the shows are uploaded in, Spotify’s familiar playlist style lets users have an instant look at what their favourite artist is listening too and skip to whatever track or part of the show they like. Beats1 is more like a traditional radio station where users have to wait to see what the host plays next.
